The narrow road goes ever on
The rain eternal
The hail beating on my traveler’s hat
A reminder of our world’s
Cruel beauty
So harsh
But further north I go
Many paths remain unseen
And the world deserves to know
The wonder of the mundane
Ikameshiki
“So harsh –
the sound of hail
On my traveler’s hat”
(Matsuo Basho)

In Windy Moors of Memory
07:19
|
|||
Raindrops pierce the mountainside
As chimes in summer winds
The ancient lake, still undisturbed
In windy moors of memory
The grey scene unfurls before hidden eyes
The lonely weathered skeleton
His memories make fertile the forgotten fields
His sorrow abandoned to the wind
Smile pensively, the lake’s reflection
A last chance to recall those golden years
May our souls all reach the summit
And our bones feed the earth
In windy moors of memory
“A weathered skeleton
In windy moors of memory
Piercing like a knife”

Snowy Morrow
07:45
|
|||
The scene before me
Cloaked in a bridal veil
Betrothed to the realms of memory
Bound to the musings of the philosopher
A gown of snow envelops the land
The flowers wear coats of white
Skyblossoms wed the horizon
Beneath morning dew, the berries hide
For winter is so long and cold
Father Sky has on this day
Shown perfection
Melting over pine needles
Snow falls in a dream
The cold whispers to your soul
Whispers in an ancient forgotten tongue
A freezing sigh, a wistful gust
Above, the old crow rests on the branch
He knows, has seen it all before
“Even a horse
arrests my eyes – on this
snowy morrow”

it sang itself
Utterly away”

Our Tendrilled Life
06:14
|
|||
Vines suffocate a bridge in this lonely place
Under a nocturne sun
Viridescent life abounds
Unwelcome…
It belongs not here
A neck as a bridge
Silent eruption
A neck is still
An eye stepped
Lost
And so they grow
Triptych of green
A hateful painter
“Now the swinging bridge
is quieted with creepers
Like our tendrilled life”

Visiting Graves
08:55
|
|||
Time
Time
Cruel, unyielding
Unflinching
The end awaits
Time
Time
In twilight we are mortal
“The whole family
All with white hair and canes
Visiting graves”
|
||||
8. |
||||
“Falling ill on a journey,
My dreams go wandering
Over withered fields”
I see once more
Moonlight in the forgotten grove
A crane lands beside me
She understands
Submerged now in this sea of departure
Remember not my strangled death rattle
But, in pensive silence, meditate on my verse
